"11,000 meters down" is an interactive book recounting the 1963 expedition to the deepest known point on earth, Challenger Deep, in the Marianas Trench in the Pacific Ocean. Further below sea level than Everest is above, Challenger Deep is unfathomably deep. Not surprisingly, it has only been visited twice by man: the first time in 1963 by U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh and oceanographer Jacques Piccard and again in 2012 by Canadian film director James Cameron.
The book I designed and built is meant to provide a metered and interactive overview of the 1963 expedition. As the book is unfolded, it reveals a micro view of the expedition timeline with supplementary information about the ocean, layer by layer. After unfolding, the macro view is fully revealed, and the user can get a sense of the depth, seeing the full view and scale drawings of some of the world’s largest and most famous structures.
